Veterans Day pays tribute to the many individuals who have honorably served our country in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Space Force.

Their uniforms, military awards and decorations symbolize their leadership and commitment to our nation.?Their boots depict their persistence and bravery.

As the sister of two combat veterans, I know firsthand that the uniform and accolades also symbolize years away from family and friends and scars that are often unseen or unspoken. The sacrifices of our veterans are too numerous to commemorate in a single day.

As such, I encourage all faculty, staff and students to use Veterans Day to honor those who have served by reflecting on ways we can give back to our veterans throughout the year. Whether it’s volunteering at a Veterans Affairs Clinic, donating to a reputable veteran charity, supporting veteran businesses, or preparing care packages for veteran families, we can each demonstrate our appreciation for their service in meaningful ways.

I also want to recognize and thank every veteran at UCF and in our community that has given so much to our country. Behind every uniform is a selfless and courageous heart. We are so grateful to each of you and to your families.

For every second you spent away from the ones you love, for every birthday and holiday you missed, for every medal you earned, for every mission you completed and those you couldn’t, for every tear you shed, for every loss you mourned and every victory you celebrated — we salute?you, on this day, and?every day.

Sincerely,
Andrea Guzmán
